Can dogs eat cucumber?

Green: safe

Yes, dogs can eat cucumber. The ASPCA lists garden cucumber as non-toxic to dogs in its plant database, along with small cucumbers harvested before they are ripe.

Why cucumber makes a good snack

According to PetMD, cucumber is 96 per cent water, with few calories and hardly any sugar. That makes it a light reward for dogs watching their weight and a refreshing change on warm days. Adult dogs and puppies can eat it raw; many enjoy its crunch.

What to watch for

  • Thin slices: According to PetMD, a whole cucumber or large pieces can get stuck in the throat or obstruct the intestines, especially in small dogs.
  • Cut off the ends: The bitter substance cucurbitacin is found mainly in the plant’s roots, stems and leaves, and in smaller amounts in the ends and skin. Cut off the ends and do not give your dog cucumber that tastes bitter.
  • No pickled gherkins: They contain a lot of salt and often garlic or onions. Neither belongs in a dog’s diet.
  • Start slowly: Some dogs do not tolerate cucumber well. Offer a small piece first and wait.

What if cucumber disagrees with your dog?

If your dog vomits or develops diarrhoea, leave cucumber out in future and offer water and rest. If symptoms persist, call your vet. If your dog has got into a jar of pickles or pickled leftovers, the salt matters: according to the ASPCA, possible signs include intense thirst, frequent urination, vomiting, trembling or weakness. Call immediately if these occur.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
