Yellow: with caution
It is best avoided. The American Kennel Club advises against sharing ice cream with your dog. A spoonful of vanilla ice cream is not an emergency, but certain flavours can be.

Why ice cream gets a yellow rating
According to the AKC, dogs produce less lactase after weaning, so many adults do not tolerate dairy products well. The effects range from soft stools to significant stomach pain. The AKC also says high-fat dairy products can trigger pancreatitis. Ice cream is full of sugar too, which contributes to weight gain over time. A spoonful of vanilla ice cream is not toxic, but it is not good for dogs either.
These flavours are dangerous
- Chocolate: Chocolate, stracciatella and cocoa ice cream contain methylxanthines, which the ASPCA identifies as toxic to dogs.
- Sugar-free: If the packaging says “sugar-free”, read the ingredients. According to the ASPCA, xylitol can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar.
- Macadamia: Ice cream containing macadamia nuts is off limits because they are toxic to dogs.
- Rum and raisin: Raisins can damage the kidneys, and alcohol is off limits anyway.
A better way to cool down
If you want to give your dog something cold in summer, the AKC suggests freezing pieces of strawberry, raspberry or apple. Mashed, frozen banana also works as a frozen dog treat.
What if your dog has licked some ice cream?
If it was vanilla or fruit ice cream, keep an eye on your dog and expect soft stools. If it was chocolate, sugar-free or a variety containing nuts or raisins, call your vet or an emergency service immediately. Have the packaging ready and explain roughly how much was eaten, when, and how much your dog weighs.
If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
