Green: safe
Yes, dogs can eat fresh pineapple. The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center lists pineapple among the fruits you can give your dog, peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces.

Why pineapple is fine
The Pet Poison Helpline also lists fresh pineapple without the skin or core as a food that poses no poisoning risk to healthy animals. The British animal charity PDSA includes it among dog-friendly fruits too, with a reminder to remove the skin. Many dogs enjoy the tangy, sweet pieces, including frozen ones on hot days.
What to watch out for
- Remove the skin and core: According to the American Kennel Club, the spiky skin and hard central core can cause an intestinal blockage.
- Choose fresh over canned: Canned pineapple usually comes in sugar syrup. Dogs do not need that.
- Start slowly: Pineapple contains plenty of fibre and fruit sugar. Too much can cause diarrhoea.
- Count it towards the daily total: Pineapple treats count towards your dog’s daily food allowance, especially if they tend to gain weight.
What if your dog eats the skin?
If your dog has only eaten a lot of flesh, monitoring them, providing water and making their next meal smaller is usually enough. If they have eaten skin or core, watch for vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite or failure to pass stools. Call your vet if these occur, as they can be signs of a blockage.
If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
