Black must never take over in a Halden Hound (Haldenstøver). The FCI standard wants a white dog with black markings and tan shading on head and legs, treating even small black or tan spots as faulty colour.

Proud and strong without heaviness
Rectangular, proud and strong without heaviness: the opening description. The neck is rather long without any dewlap, chest deep with well-sprung ribs but not barrel-shaped. Drawn forwards, the ear reaches mid-muzzle.
What the standard says about origins
Little. It names Norway as origin, scent hound as role and requires a working trial. The valid text is from 1999, with English considered the original. No breed history is given, and speculation cannot replace a source. Norwegian compatriots with entries are the Hygen Hound (Hygenhund) and the Norwegian Hound (Dunker); neighbouring Sweden offers the Hamilton Hound (Hamiltonstövare).
Calm expression, long stride
Dark brown eyes should look calm. There is no separate temperament chapter, with only aggressive or excessively fearful dogs excluded. Movement should be light, parallel and ground-covering. Built for kilometres, the dog searches widely, follows scents persistently and may not heed your first call.
Activity without hunting
Provide long daily outings, long-line training and nose tasks such as tracking or person searches. A short-lead walk alone is insufficient. With good foundations, the dog can learn to settle indoors after enough outdoor activity.
The harsh coat through the year
Harsh, very dense hair with undercoat tolerates cold and wet well. Brush weekly, more during shedding. Well-haired toes readily collect burrs and snow clumps.
Health: gaps rather than figures
We found no reliable Halden Hound studies. McMillan and colleagues list the breed but did not include it in analysis. Europe PMC searches for Halden Hound and Haldenstøver returned no results. This establishes lack of systematic study rather than good health. Ask for the parents’ hip and elbow results if available.
Who lives well with this dog, and who does not
Hunters and rural people with ample outdoor time and enthusiasm for nose work offer a good home. City flats, brief obligatory walks and owners mainly seeking a café companion fit less well. Anyone wanting a white endurance dog and putting on boots daily can find a reliable friend.
