Arkhangelsk, Komi, Karelia and Udmurtia: the Laikas of these forest regions became a single breed in 1947. The FCI standard calls the Russian-European Laika (Russko-Evropeïskaïa Laïka) a multipurpose hunting dog, for many game species, and describes it as calm and balanced. Black with white is its most typical colour.

Many Laikas, one breed
The standard says the first descriptions of northern dogs with erect ears appeared in 1895, including Cheremis and Zyrian Laikas. Descendants of Laikas from several regions were united in 1947, followed by the breed standard in 1952; only lengthy selection produced a uniform type. The FCI has definitively recognised it since 1980. A genetic analysis suggests ancestry from the Karelian Bear Dog , which it also strongly resembles; however, only nine Laikas were studied (Pohjoismäki et al. 2018).
Calm indoors, wide awake in the woods
The standard calls it calm and balanced, with well-developed scenting ability and a talent for finding game. The FCI requires a working trial; it remains a hunting dog. Seeing it merely as an attractive spitz underestimates how independently it makes decisions outdoors.
Without hunting grounds, it needs alternatives
If it does not hunt, it needs long daily walks, tracking and search games. A long line is essential: reliable recall on a fresh game trail is the exception. A garden with high, secure fencing helps daily life.
Collar, cheek whiskers and thick skin
The hard guard hair collects little dirt, and the standard describes thick, elastic skin. Brush thoroughly weekly; during moulting, woolly undercoat comes away in tufts. Brush-like hair grows between the toes, protecting against ice in winter.
Health: few studies
I found no study with reliable disease figures for this breed, and McMillan et al.’s large British lifespan study does not list it. Across many breeds, smaller and more genetically diverse dogs lived longer on average (Kraus et al. 2023). Ask about the parents’ hip X-rays, eye results and how closely related they are.
For hunters and very experienced owners
It suits people who hunt or provide a genuine alternative job, live rurally and guide an independent dog calmly.
Difficult if
you expect off-lead woodland freedom, live in a city or seek a dog that follows every instruction immediately.
Meet its Siberian relatives in the East Siberian Laika and West Siberian Laika entries. To check whether a hunting spitz fits your life, try the breed quiz or explore more thoroughly with the book “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). The free Puppy Starter Pack guides the first weeks. Its clear black-and-white coat looks striking as a digital artwork to download or among our dog portraits.
